Exit Kingdom Alden Bell 9780230766747 Books

I read "Reapers" and I was so in love. As one reviewer said.... probably one of my favorite books (besides Earth Abides. Another PA book). Now Exit Kingdom comes along... again one of my favorite books. I didn't even know this book existed until a reviewer told me. Ready? It's not on Kindle. I bought the paperback from the U.K. I would've paid anything for this sequel.

I don't write details about the book. Others do much better than me. No spoilers (I try). I was just enthralled and moved by this novel. Actually, I'm without words.

Lastly, there was a Q&A with the author at the end of the book. He wrote he loves books that take a left turn. Me too. I get tired of books that end with a nice shiny bow. Yawn. Many left turns in this novel. Get ready!

Did I mention this book is superb? Quick, order it from the U.K. right now! Thank you Mr. Bell.

Exit Kingdom Alden Bell 9780230766747 Books Reviews

Another literate zombie novel from Bell. Refreshing from most of the self published crap choking the genre.
Good, but not great like The "Reapers Are The Angels"
Excellent book all around. One of my favorites. This guy is an incredible writer - almost poetic. Highly recommend this and his other book The Reapers are the Angels.
The Reapers Are the Angels is the first book I've ever read and then reread immediately because I was so entranced by it. The characters, the rhythm, the world building all sang out to me.

"Exit Kingdom" is written as mostly a prequel to "Reapers" and that was part of the problem for me. I didn't like the character of Abraham in "Reapers" and I sure didn't want more of him. I wanted more of Moses and Maury.

This prequel just didn't have the same atmosphere as the first book. It dragged in spots, the characters were unlikable and I guess I just had too high of expectations from it and I was disappointed.

All that noted down, "Exit Kingdom" is still a well-written book. The author Joshua Gaylord writing as Alden Bell has a real gift in bringing this post-apocalyptic world to life. It just wasn't the world I wanted to read about this time around. One of my best memories of "Reapers" was the beauty that Temple found in small, everyday occurrences. There wasn't any beauty in "Exit Kingdom."
Exit Kingdom encourages you to turn the next page through curiosity rather than the rush of adrenalin that some books give. It returns you to the same universe as in Reapers but it's a very different story. The Reapers book is possibly the best book that I have ever read, so Exit Kingdom could never match it. It's an excellent story though and well worth reading. Reapers sometimes draws comparisons with The Passage. For me, Twelve, the sequel to The Passage, seems to pander to it's Hollywood franchise possibilities too much. Alden Bell's pre/sequel stays true to the spirit and tone set by it's predecessor. There's no Hollywood ending here, which makes for a better read in the long run.
The prose alone should send you rushing to read Exit Kingdom. I'm uncertain as to the meaning of this book. I expect I will need a reread tomorrow.
It is not bright or happy. It is bleak and beautiful. Much like life I suppose.
Though it is a second book in the "universe" of The Reapers Are the Angels A Novel, one can easily be read without the other. But why do such a silly thing, when they are both utterly fantastic books?
This is a "slow" zombie, post-apocalypse tale; No edge-of-your-seat-mad-running-from-hungry-zombies chase scenes. Instead, it is a given that the dead rise again. Whilst there is a small amount of longing for the before, the characters are mainly concerned with dealing with the now.
They are complex humans, who parlay with nuanced and intriguing accents and turns-of-phrase.
The story is really a backdrop for the characters, and more questions are left unanswered than not. But that is the magic of it, isn't it? Who are you, where are you going, what does it all mean? NOT having all the answers is what makes this book feel so earthly and real.
Read it. Read The Reapers are the Angels, too.
Hell, read Hummingbirds A Novel (P.S.) while you're at it, because this guy writes awesome stuff, whatever it is.
