It is 1553 and for five years the fifteen year old protestant King Edward VI has reigned with the aid of a Lord Protector. It has been twenty years since King Henry VIII broke away from the yoke of the Roman church and Catholicism is outlawed and a thing of the past.

Bethany is the daughter of a wealthy merchant and her only concern is to avoid an arranged marriage to the impoverished baron her father had found to marry her for her dowry.

When the wealthy Earl of Summerville suggests a marriage which will make her a very rich countess she is thrilled and his confession that he is a hated catholic and that he expects her to follow his faith, means little. If Bethany had thought about it at all, she had believed that there were no Catholics left in England. Her eyes firmly fixed on a handsome, amiable husband and the title, wealth and huge country mansion which comes with him, she believes she will never have to adhere to that condition, she believes there will never be another catholic monarch, despite his assurances that the catholic Mary Tudor will succeed her brother to the throne.

She has no idea how hard it is going to be to keep that pledge when Mary gains the throne and begins a brutal campaign to bring England back to the Catholic church of Rome. As Bethany's protestant family and friends are persecuted for their beliefs, beliefs for which they are prepared to die a horrible death, she finds the struggle to support her Catholic husband and give lip service to his faith to be impossible despite having fallen deeply in love with him.

This is a tale of love, passion and betrayal in an age when God is a very real part of everyday life and the way he is worshipped worth of dying for.

HOLY POISON is a series of historical romances concerning the ordinary people who lived through the religious upheaval brought about by Mary Tudor's determination to return England to the Catholic Church.

Holy Poison The Judas Pledge edition by Margaret Brazear Romance eBooks

An historical romance focusing on the politically charged firestorm created by the Protestant/Catholic winds of change in that era. Brazear is a good writer - the research and attention to detail is both obvious and compelling. While this book was not quite as alluring, to me at least, as her, The Romney Princess (merely a matter of genre choice). I do enjoy English history and culture, and that alone made this read both enjoyable and worthwhile. I look forward to more works by Margaret Brazear.

Holy Poison The Judas Pledge edition by Margaret Brazear Romance eBooks Reviews

This is the second novel of this author's that I have read. her style in this novel is reminiscent of Fiona Buckley. I really like that she keeps to her historical period but doesn't overwhelm one with historical details.
The book is about ordinary people and the struggle of religion in their lives during the reign of Bloody Mary. Bethany is visiting her sister Julia who is married to A homosexual which she did not know at first. She is i written about more in another book.Bethany meets the handsome neighbor Richard the Earl of Summerville .Julia is against them building any kind of relationship she is pregnant by Richard after one time. The book is about Bethany and what she goes through marrying Richard. He tells her upfront it will be a marriage to give him an heir. He also tells her he is planning on keeping his several mistress.he has
Rachel his special one living near by.
They seem reasonably happy for awhile she has problems accepting the Catholic religion. He takes her to the coronation of Mary and see how she would be toward her. Richard asks Rachel to go live with him at the place posing as his wife leaving Bethany home pregnant. The book has some twists about what you thought but it was not so. I can not ruin the book for you but I am not sure I could have forgiven him for what he did to Bethany while living with Rachel for years. She has a lot of heartache and betrayal will she survive it .Ricard is going to face some trouble also. Is there any chance of happiness for these two.i think you will like this book you just can't say much As I usually would so not to give too much away.
An excellently crafted work. While I'm not a fan of "women's secret business" type stories, Margaret Brazear has the ability to take one back to an era when women were regarded as mere possessions so convincingly I wonder if she has a time machine stashed away in the attic and makes secret forays into the past at night. There's intrigue and sex, and sex and intrigue - what more could a mere male reader want? The love scenes are exceptionally well written, in a style that suits the era, without being gratuitous and they fit the narrative perfectly.

The author's knowledge of this turbulent time is impressive and her descriptions of how the "law" got rid of perceived villains back then - supposedly mercifully - made my eyes water. The aristocracy were a blood-thirsty lot, who seemed to spend much of their time leaping from bed to bed and servicing mistresses (or anyone who got in the way...)

I read this book by accident on my wife's e-reader and I'm going to convince her to get the sequel.

Highly recommended to all males - you may learn something.
I enjoyed the love story, though the heroine was a bit difficult to like, but what really pleased me, was Ms. Brazear's attention to the history of the era, and the way she used the backdrop of Queen Mary's short reign and her religious furor, to enhance the storyline.
Good story and well written with lots of drama and tension. The history and background and characterizations are vivid, realistic and very finely drawn.

Unfortunately the heroine Bethany was such a brat I was praying for something horribly permanent to happen to her and for the hero to wind up with the other woman in a happy ever after. Needless to say it is a romance and Bethany gets her HEA but she was so not worthy of it. I don't like to see the undeserving get an HEA while more noble characters get dumped by the wayside and sadly that is what happened here.

As a period piece it was great, the story was moving -- I just couldn't root for the heroine.
